Notes

Fourth-generation Overgaauw winemaker, David van Velden, has quietly set about bringing this '80s Stellenbosch benchmark into the 21st century. Recently tasted, this is a quintessential 2015 red with good ageing potential and, as one of the last releases from this great vintage, we think it’s a well-priced classic perfect for the cellar.

Capturing the pedigree of the past, the 2015 Overgaauw Tria Corda now firmly joins Stellenbosch’s finest. Continuous hard work in both vineyard and cellar has convinced us that this is a property to watch!

The 2015 Tria Corda is a refined Stellenbosch Bordeaux red with 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Super-fine and silky tannins underscore a finely-coiled, complex palate with elegant, pure fruit and a slowly evolving, textured and savoury finish. It’s a wonderfully poised and elegant wine and re-affirms this grand old estate’s terroir.

The Van Veldens are true Cape winemaking pioneers. David’s father, Braam, was a founding member of the Cape Winemakers Guild in 1984 and they were one of the first estates to produce a Bordeaux blend, make Merlot in SA and use 225ℓ Bordeaux barrels for élevage. It is this ‘gees’ that permeates the latest Tria Corda release.

Limited – just over 3,000 bottles produced.

Tasting notes:
'Reflecting the steady improvements at Overgaauw since David van Velden took over in 2009, this is a superb Stellenbosch blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Polished, fine and very elegant, with nuanced oak, fresh acidity and cassis, plum and black cherry fruit, this is 2015 at its best. 2021-35.' – Tim Atkin SA Special Report 2019, 95/100
