Numanthia – Dense, potent and hedonistic

You will struggle to find a wine region that produces wines as dense, potent and hedonistic as those of Toro. Produced from Tinta de Toro, a smaller-berried clone of Tempranillo offering greater concentration in the arid northern regions of Spain, it often shows more Cabernet-like tannins than Ribera del Duero or Rioja. The hot summers, icy winters and old vines all contribute to making these massively tannic, yet suave wines that still hold elegance and freshness.

Wine Cellar first imported Numanthia wines in the early 2000s when Robert Parker put Toro on the map. Now owned by LVMH, it is one of Spain’s best producers. The luxurious wines aged beautifully and we are proud to be offering them once again.

Numanthia Wines

The Numanthia 2012 was No. 84 on Wine Enthusiast’s 2017 Top 100 list and scored 95 points. It is produced from 50 – 120-year-old, extremely low-yielding bush vines that survived the phylloxera outbreak at the beginning of the last century. Raised in new oak, it’s a very serious wine that will age for many decades.

The Termes 2014 is a more vibrant, slightly softer expression of Toro from the ‘younger vines’ which, in Toro, means less than 50 years old. It is a freakishly delicious wine with ripe, yet dry tannins balanced by masses of fruit. We frankly cannot think of a better partner for your steaks this winter.
