Notes

The Niepoort family has been creating Port Wines since 1842. The first property in Douro was bought in 1987 and Dirk Niepoort started a new Era in the company with the creation of the first Redoma red in 1991. In the last years Niepoort took on the great challenge of interpreting other soils and climates and acquired two properties in other regions, Dão and Bairrada. Discover the Niepoort Triangle which express the different terroirs: Schist (Douro), Limestone (Bairrada) and Granite (Dão). Vertente is made from grapes from the 25 year old vineyards of Quinta de Nápoles and old vines planted on the slopes of the river Pinhão, where Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz are predominant. The old vines contribute to the elegance of this wine, while the 25 year old vines give it youth. It is a wine that finds a unique balance between concentration, fruit, complexity and elegance, creating an excellent red. Made to be consumed young, it has great ageing potential.

Tasting Notes
‘Mid cherry. Beautifully fragrant with dark-red fruit and a stony quality adding complexity and finesse. On the palate, has a lightness of touch but still a remarkable intensity, allied to extreme freshness. Elegance and great persistence. A wine that is beautifully balanced on a tightrope.’ – Julia Harding MW (7th October 2016), JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20

‘Lively and round, with real integrity. Racy and very different from the Douro norm but it's balanced with juice and stoniness – and it works.’ – Jancis Robinson (19th September 2017), 17/20

'The 2014 Vertente is a familiar Douro blend from Niepoort, often one of the winery's best values. I'm not so sure this year. Rather light and rather dry, it is lacking the exuberant fruit of the 2013 (granting that I do not have them side-by-side). It still shows fine freshness. As it airs, some of that fruitiness that I remember from other years comes to the foreground and it becomes much more pleasing. If there isn't much concentration, it has fine structure for its level and a clean, pure finish. The structure, acidity and silky feel are all pretty good and notably better than the fruit and depth. Overall, in a difficult vintage, this modestly priced red (no official price was provided, but it is typically a bit over $20) does pretty well. Understated but intriguing, this should make a very nice house pour. I usually think that these can age well, but I'm not sure this has the concentration to do that. Still, there should be no rush, even if it drinks nicely now.' – The Wine Advocate, 87/100

‘With a beautiful violet colour of medium concentration, Vertente 2014 has a delicate profile with mineral and wild black fruit notes. The wood is well integrated, showing some smoked and spice notes. Tense, deep, and with a good structure, it is fine and elegant in the mouth, with a balanced acidity and well integrated tannins.’ – Winemaker
