Notes

The Poeirinho, whose name refers to the former designation of the Baga grape variety, is a tribute to the great Bairrada wines of the past which were light in colour and low in alcohol but offer tremendous ageing potential. Dirk Niepoort’s great passion for this grape variety and the fantastic terroir of the Bairrada region inspired them over the past few years to acquire a number of small but very old Baga vineyard sites around the Cantanhede area. Despite a vintage as difficult as 2014 in Bairrada, they were able to create an incredible wine full of character.

Tasting notes:
'The 2014 Poeirinho is a Baga aged for 20 months in a wooden vat. Listed at only 11% alcohol, this is from a rather awful vintage in the region. Some may not even produce top-level wines. I was surprised at how much I liked it. Granting that it is younger and fresher than its 2012 sibling this issue, it even seems a little richer on opening, thanks to its relative youth. It doesn't have the same focus and power, to be sure, but there is respectable concentration for the level and the year, it tastes great, if you like them on the earthier side, and it has real structure. The next day, it is juicy on the finish, plus appealingly complex. This is not the best in the brand from Niepoort, but it is an impressive achievement in a very tough year.' – Mark Squires, Wine Advocate, 90/100

'The 2014 Poeirinho displays a pale but vibrant violet hue. The terroir clearly shines through in the wine’s elegant and complex aromatic profile, where one can actually detect the region’s limestone balanced perfectly against hints of spice, cherries and forest berries. The palate boasts great precision, a firm backbone and plenty of grip. Tight, profoundly mineral and refreshing, with high acidity and noticeable but smooth tannins, this is a wine which will improve in bottle. A long and linear finish offers plenty of freshness. With its mere 11% alcohol, it will be best enjoyed slightly chilled to around 15°C and served in a Pinot Noir glass.' – Winemaker

Vinification:
The Bairrada region experienced a long and harsh winter which, much like the 2013 vintage, brought high levels of precipitation. A practically non-existent spring and a summer with temperatures of around 30°C increased the risk of disease and delayed ripening. They began testing for ripeness around mid-August by analysing the seeds and the grapes’ health. Harvest commenced at the beginning of September. The Poeirinho was vinified in lagares for 4 weeks before completing its fermentation process in a large, used 2500l vat. It was in this same vat that the wine went through malolactic fermentation and a maturation period of 20 months before it was bottled unfiltered.
