Notes

Tasting notes:
'New. From a Voor Paardeberg vineyard. Seven-day skin contact before fermentation. An alluring nose with top notes of flowers and herbs before citrus, peach and green apple. The palate is all of a piece with lovely fruit expression, a great line of acidity and long, dry finish. A really super effort from this alternative variety and definitely one for the early adopters to seek out. Alcohol: 12.7%.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100

Winemaker's comments:
My drive for Grenache has led me to find the only vineyard of Grenache Gris planted in South Africa. This is the pink-skinned cousin of Grenache blanc. 'Gris' translates to 'grey', and grapes are genetically identical to Blanc or Noir grapes, but have a deeper, more copper coloured skin that most white wine grapes, so the wines they produce usually tend to be darker and deeper in flavour, with more tension than a Blanc would have. This vineyards is in the Voor-Paardeberg, planted in decomposed granite and clay soils, giving it a fine texture and rich flavor.

Viticulture: To show the character that makes this grape so unique, I played around with skin contact by soaking the crushed grapes for a period of 7 days before pressing to older French oak barrels. Here, a natural fermentation took place in barrels and wine spent a total of 10 months on gross lees. A total of 4 barrels were made an bottled.
