Notes

New-wave South African Riesling is exemplified in this cracking offering from under-the-radar winemaker Carsten Migliarina. His dry, taut, low alcohol 2016 Seitensprung Riesling is just brilliant and offers huge value at R130.

'Like all Carsten’s wines, this is another serious effort. So grown up and old worldly in style. Not sure how he pulls it off time and time again, but this is so taught and mineral-laden with gravel, wet river pebbles, wet chalk, dried herbs and dry summer stable straw. The palate is a mirror image of the nose, seamlessly balanced and vibrantly fresh showing crunchy green apple, dried straw spice, pithy green pear, and incredibly rasping dry lemon complemented by crystalline purity and framed by profound liquid minerality. This is a very classy Riesling unlike anything I’ve tasted recently in South Africa, built more in a structured German Nahe or Rhinegau Trocken style. Superb wine. Glückwunsch Carsten!' – Greg Sherwood MW, 92/100

Winemaker's comments:
'Migliarina wines are made for purists and lovers of the South African landscape. My wines explore what is new and unique about South African vineyards. I source from across the entire Western Cape, and only use grapes which represent the most exciting possibilities of South African wine. I dream of doing our exquisite South African biosphere justice in my life's work, and hope to share it with the world.' – Carsten Migliarina, Winemaker

Tasting notes:
‘A fine example of SA Riesling with the modern freshness of lime fruit blossoms, reminiscent of good Riesling from Claire Valley, Australia, but with the verve and fruit-weight at the back of Rieslings from Alsace, France. This is a delicious drink, with or without food. Light and refreshing but with a flavour intensity that carries though to the end of a focussed and dry palate.’ – James Pietersen (February 2017)
