84% Syrah, 9% Carignan and 7% Grenache
Parquet is a play on the three grape varieties used in the blend, like a parquet floor which has three pieces to make up a square and fits together perfectly (hence the Parquet art work on the label). This is the second experimental wine in Carsten's creative range.
The Migliarina Parquet 2016 is a perfect example of Carsten Migliarina’s craftsmanship as it is balanced, fresh and elegant. Since 2002, Carsten has quietly been sticking to his vision of producing food-friendly, refined wines that also offer immense value. Recently, his successful Migliarina range has been supplemented with additional small-batch offerings. These allow him to express his creativity and produce some truly unique wines. His latest release, the Parquet 2016, is a joy to drink. It skates wonderfully along the borders of balance, intense flavour and freshness while the finish is focused and dry. Delicious!
This Rhône-style red blend is built mostly around Stellenbosch Syrah with the added fresh vibrancy coming from Swartland Carignan and rounded out with Wellington Grenache which gives it just a touch of savoury fruit. This is a smart and precise wine, especially when considering its price. We liked this wine so much, we put it in last month’s Wine Cellar Insiders' case.
Tasting notes:
'The 2016 Parquet, Casten Migliarina’s Syrah-based Rhône blend, saw no new oak. It has a lifted bouquet of red berry fruit, singed leather, earthy notes and hints of pressed rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity. This is a Syrah imbued with a sense of effortless harmony and a slightly austere, classically styled finish. Very fine, although I would rather broach this in its flush of youth rather than with bottle age.' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 91/100
'84% Syrah, 7% Carignan, 9% Grenache. Syrah 8 to 10 weeks on skins, 2017 Grenache blended in. One barrel of Swartland Carignan 2016. Beautiful dark, alluring wine with sweet black pepper corns, savoury cured meats, black berry spice, black olive and black plum style that eventually meanders back to brightness and purity with the use of the 2017 Grenache addition. Another crystalline style, total focus and purity, with component parts beautifully pieced together. So cool, pure and fresh, with great precision that is a manifestation of Carstens own personality. Lovely wine.' – Greg Sherwood, Wine Safari, 93+/100
