Vondeling, Chardonnay 2015 – R 115
While soft in texture with a broad palate, Chardonnay offers great versatility when enjoyed with food. This 2015 Vondeling Chardonnay from the Voor-Paardeberg is medium-bodied with complex aromas of flowers and stone fruit that lead on to a wonderfully balanced and fresh palate. The oak is well managed and only adds to the wine’s appeal. Vondeling produces some of the greatest value wines around and this vintage is particularly excellent. Alc.: 13.5% vol.

Intellego, Syrah 2015 – R 150
Jurgen Gouws is a Swartland winemaker who produces wine under his own label, Intellego. Most of his wines are more on the natural side (using no additives) and have a keen international following. The perfect example of fine Swartland Syrah is the 2015 Intellego which reflects the character of Syrahs from the Rhône Valley, France. It is delicious with savoury black olives and dry pepperiness on the palate while the finish is vibrant and fresh. Light- to medium-bodied, it is more savoury than fruity. Alc.: 12.5% vol.

Kleine Zalze, Vineyard Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 – R 135
Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon of this quality, at this price, simply cannot be overlooked. You know the brand, now get to know the best vintage ever – 2015. The brightness of this hallowed vintage shines through with the perfect balance of cassis, red fruit, earth and a hint of tomato leaf, typical of Helderberg Cabernet. The 40% new oak is seamlessly integrated into finely-tuned tannins and an elegant 14% alcohol shell. Full-bodied in style with great power and poise. Alc.: 14% vol.

Raats, Red Jasper 2015 – R 190
Only just released, this is perennial ‘value wine’ favourite of Neal Martin’s. Tasting for The Wine Advocate, he’s arguably the most important wine critic in the world! Made by Bruwer Raats, the king of Cabernet Franc, the 2015 Red Jasper is Cabernet Franc-dominated, with 36% Malbec, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. Fruited with red and dark berries and fine, fresh tannins from the Cabernet Franc coming to the fore. The wine celebrates the vibrancy and finesse of Cabernet Franc and is an elegant and fine-tuned drop. Alc.: 14% vol.

Chapoutier, Rasteau 2014 – R 245
Rasteau is a region in the southern part of the Rhône Valley in France. The wines are Grenache-based with the addition of Syrah and are generally a bit rustic but powerful in flavour. The wines can often be quite similar to our local Syrah-based wines as they have a similar climate. Bright, tangy red fruit is nicely balanced by spice, earth and that wonderful garrigue of the Southern Rhône. The palate exhibits dark cherry fruit and deep meaty flavours reminiscent of biltong. The wine is structured with grippy, dry and charmingly rustic tannins. Ready to drink now but will mature over the next 5 years. Alc.: 14% vol.

Colmant, Brut Reserve NV – R 180
While many wineries produce a bubbly, Colmant only produces bubblies and they are masters at it! In fact, the winemaker happens to be from Champagne! This is a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. A subtle pale gold colour with a very clean and elegant nose. The aroma has a gentle, spicy toastiness with a lemon zest perfume followed by more mature fruit. Plenty of freshness on the palate, with a good acidity which perfectly balances the yeasty depth, bready flavours and ample structure. Long, smooth finish. Will develop nicely over the next few years. Alc.: 11.5% vol.
