New releases from Stellenbosch rock star

Reenen Borman’s star keeps on rising. This rock star Stellenbosch winemaker from Boschkloof shot the lights out last year with his 98-pointer Boschkloof Epilogue and we believe he is making some of the most exciting wines in South Africa at the moment.

His vison, combined with grapes sourced from unique vineyards, results in wines of great authenticity that reverberate with a sense of place, such is the Patatsfontein Steen 2016. A momentous wine, shimmering with fine floral aromatics and a palate that delivers balanced power, yet ends bone-dry and detailed. Youthful now, we think that this wine should only be broached in 2 years’ time.

A delicious blend of 88% old vine Colombard and 12% Chenin, the 2016 release of the Montagu Patatsblanc follows on from the ‘smashable’ 2015. Walking a tight rope of fruit-weight and freshness, the 2016 offers more substance, length and refinement. As with the Steen above, this is even better than the remarkable 2015.

The last wine on offer is from Reenen’s new project which focuses on the Polkadraai region. The Kottabos Grenache Syrah 2016 is 87% Grenache Noir with the rest Syrah. Typical Rhône aromas of olive tapenade and spice blend with new world fruit purity. Made in an elegant, medium-bodied style, the wine is a good blend of new world charm balanced by a fine saline thread.

Due to the limited availability of the Steen and Grenache Syrah, we can only offer 6 bottles per person.

Patatsfontein, Steen 2016 – R 295
Winemaking for the 2016 involved spontaneous fermentation before maturation lasting 10 months in barrels of various sizes, none new. A detailed and captivating nose of fynbos, potpourri, naartjie, kumquat and peach while the palate is incredibly dense and full flavoured but not weighty. Great structure, composure and length without being at all forced, it makes a huge impression. – Christian Eedes 96/100

Patatsfontein, Patatsblanc 2016 – R 150
The 2016, consisting of 88% Colombard and 12% Chenin Blanc, has just been released. A subtle and elusive nose of citrus, peach and dried herbs while the palate displays lovely fruit purity, zippy acidity and a pithy finish. Perhaps a tad less pretty and ephemeral than the maiden 2015 but still very likeable. – Christian Eedes 90/100

Kottabos, Grenache Syrah 2016 – R 195
Reenen Borman of Boschkloof, seemingly uncontainable when it comes to new winemaking ventures, has just released Kottabos 2016, the name referring to an ancient Greek drinking game, the wine consisting of 87% Grenache and 13% Syrah from the Polkadraai area of Stellenbosch. Both components underwent 50% whole-bunch fermentation, maturation lasting 11 months in older oak. A captivating nose of pomegranate, candy floss, earth and spice while the palate is light and fresh yet very flavourful, the tannins fine and supple. Super stuff! – Christian Eedes 93/00
