'Lightness, freshness and informality are set to stay. Alcohols at long last are declining … the drift to easier, less-worked wines – both light and weighty – truer to their vineyard origins, is irreversible,' writes John Platter in his rousing new book, 'My Kind of Wine'. (Not to be confused with the Platter’s Wine Guide, which he founded in 1979.)
These words encompass the current revolutionary state of the SA wine industry, but also the styling of Wine Cellar’s new own-label wines. Made by Ryan Mostert of Silwervis and yet-to-be-launched Terra Cura, the wines were previewed at Young Guns 5 earlier this year.
In 'My Kind of Wine', John describes the Wine Cellar Chenin as a 'genteel Swartland Chenin… grounded in subtle savoury notes'. It is slightly richer than the Syrah, which has a 'light, limpid texture of fine French Rhône' and an 'airily nimble finish.' Both are 12.5% alcohol and offer fabulous drinking over the next few years.
The book covers John’s favourite traditional producers as well as the new wave and Young Guns, celebrating South Africa's incredible diversity of old and new stars.

Wine Cellar Swartland Chenin Blanc 2014 – R 139
Made by Terra Cura as a Wine Cellar special. Supple, midweight, with herbs and tangerine notes, as well as some lemony freshness. Midweight, complex, fresh. – Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak. Score: 91/100
Wine Cellar, local merchants and cellarers of fine wine, recently launched a Chenin Blanc and a Syrah under its own label. Both W.O. Swartland, they are made by Ryan Mostert of new winery Terra Cura. An enticing nose of peach, apricot and even a little pineapple plus spice and dried herbs. Good fruit expression, tangy acidity and a gently savoury finish. Lean but not too lean – a little phenolic grip adds interest." – Christain Eedes, Winemag.co.za. Score: 90/100
Wine Cellar Swartland Syrah 2014 – R 139
Another Wine Cellar private label made by Terra Cura. This is fresh, juicy and spicy with nice peppery notes and raspberry and cherry fruit. Fresh and expressive, it’s a lovely wine.
Red and black fruit plus some fragrant, scrub-like notes. Good fruit concentration, fresh acidity and just the right amount of tannic grip. No oak derived aromas or flavours to speak of. A charming wine. – Christain Eedes, Winemag.co.za. Score: 90/100
