Mullineux Syrah 2015 – Their best yet

The Swartland is a beautiful and wild place… that bares the souls of grape vines, especially in those varieties that can take the ruggedness, the true personality of site is revealed.’ – Chris and Andrea Mullineux

The Mullineuxs have long acknowledged the rugged beauty of the Swartland and Syrah’s potential to express the region’s special sites. They have been instrumental in putting Swartland Syrah on the map and the highly-rated 2015 vintage brings us their best Syrah to date.

The 2015 Mullineux Syrah is a stunner. The grapes come from 7 sustainably-farmed vineyards – 4 parcels from the stony Shale and Schist-based soils of the Kasteelberg, 2 parcels of dry-land, bush vines grown in the decomposed Granite of the Paardeberg, and 1 parcel from the rolling, iron-rich soils west of Malmesbury. The wine is made as naturally as possible with 50% whole bunch, natural yeast and raised in a variety of larger oak barrels.

Mullineux Syrah

The Mullineuxs are at the cutting edge of SA’s fine wine scene and have received multiple ground-breaking awards. Their 2015 Syrah epitomises Swartland Syrah. It is full-flavoured with deep, brooding fruit and a fine savoury edge. The fine, coated tannins follow on to a firm, dry end. This is a long-ageing, serious Syrah and essential to any fine wine collector’s cellar. Drink 2018 – 2030.

Mullineux, Syrah 2015
Similar in style to 2013, one of Andrea’s favourite vintages, I think the 2015 is their finest yet. It has classic Swartland dark fruit, balanced perfectly by grippy fine tannins that offer gravitas and more power than previous vintages. We keep on hyping up the 2015 vintage but, in this instance, we find it more than justified. The rich core of fruit is beautifully wrapped up in a finely-tuned structure that bodes well for maturation potential. – James Pietersen (June 2017)
