SA's best Sauvignon Blanc - Suider Terras 2015

The most famous wines are made by a combination of special vineyards, near-perfect conditions and man’s finest efforts. Such a wine is the Bloemendal Suider Terras Sauvignon Blanc 2015. Produced from a 35-year-old heritage block, this is South Africa's finest Sauvignon. Wine Cellar has secured an exclusive lot of sequentially numbered, hand signed cases; offering a rare opportunity to be part of history and to celebrate this fine, old vineyard.

Planted in 1982, the Suider Terras vineyard is among the oldest Sauvignon blocks in the country. Producing a miniscule 943kg/ha of fruit, these gnarly and twisted vines, shaped by the assault of the infamous South Easter, produce a rare and special wine. Just looking upon the vineyard is a magical experience. Read more about this special vineyard.

The 2015 Suider Terras, set to become legendary, is initially shy but the aromatics are compelling and draw you in. There is a complex array of white peach, fynbos, stewed fennel, curry leaf, blackcurrant and spice. The nose is somehow subtle, yet constantly evolving, hinting at more complexity to be unveiled. The palate follows effortlessly, a near perfect interchange between fruit weight, acidity and a fine, linear tail. The wine has power but is light at the same time and has a wonderful, lingering finish. More than just the best Sauvignon Blanc, this is one of the finest white wines in South Africa. Drink 2018 – 2025.

Bloemendal, Suider Terras Sauvignon Blanc 2015
These contoured, south- and south-west facing vineyards consistently produce one of my favourite Cape Sauvignon Blancs. Expertly wooded, with zesty acidity, a creamy mid-palate and grapefruit and smoked lemon flavours, it’s like a top Pessac-Léognan at a very affordable price. Drink: 2016-2020. – Tim Atkin MW, 95/100

Off windswept southerly terrace, has gripping intensity, fantastic concentration. Superbly balanced, both weight and agility carrying heady blackcurrant, lemongrass features with endless length. Older French oak matured. Will reward cellaring. – 2017 Platter's Wine Guide, 5 stars
