Occultum Lapidem 2013 - incredible ratings

‘Any project Michel Chapoutier is involved with seems to excel, and his Roussillon Bila Haut domaine is no exception,’ says Jeb Dunnuck of the Wine Advocate. Les Vignes de Bila Haut has been Wine Cellar’s best-selling wine in history. A characterful Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre blend, it is made from young vines on savage soils and shows bright fruit along with fine minerality and a deep, savoury structure. It offers amazing drinkability and you simply cannot go wrong.

But the most exciting release from this great Roussillon vintage is the 2013 Occultum Lapidem, with a mammoth rating from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 94-97 points! Occultum Lapidem is short for ‘Terrae Visita Interiora Terrae Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem’, meaning ‘Visit the interior of the earth and rectifying (purifying) you will find the hidden stone.’ This refers, perhaps, to the terraces of ancient black and brown schist, gneiss and limestone that contribute to this wild, yet succulent and profound wine. A blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, it will age well for a decade or more.

We have also landed his hugely sought-after Sélections Parcellaires from 2012. Three wines have been rated a perfect 100/100 by the Wine Advocate.

Tasting notes

M.Chapoutier Bila Haut Occultum Lapidem 2013

A step up and an incredible effort, the 2013 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Latour de France Occultum Lapidem is made from a mix of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan that comes from schist and chalky soils. A serious, classically styled effort, it offers awesome aromas and flavors (blackberry, mineral and licorice), full-bodied richness and fabulous concentration that never comes across as heavy or cumbersome. Showing additional minerality and definition with time in the glass, this beauty will have 10-15 years of longevity and should not be missed. – Jeb Dunnuck, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

M.Chapoutier Les Vignes de Bila Haut 2013

The 2013 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Les Vignes de Bila Haut offers a deep, rich and layered profile that has outstanding potential. Comprised of mostly Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, with a splash of Carignan, it’s loaded with notions of black olive, pepper, earth and assorted dark fruits. This gives way to a medium-bodied, fresh and elegant palate feel that carries solid concentration, good acidity and a clean, dry finish. It will drink well on release and have 5-7 years of evolution. – Jeb Dunnuck, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

M.Chapoutier Les Vignes de Bila Haut Blanc 2013

Last of the Bila Haut releases, the 2013 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Les Vignes de Bila Haut Blanc is a classy, pure white that’s comprised of Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris and Vermentino. It offers excellent white peach-styled fruit, plenty of minerality and a rich, full texture that stays lively and fresh. Finishing clean and dry, it will be versatile on the dinner table, and should drink nicely for a year or three. – Jeb Dunnuck, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
