Tolbos Tannat

Lowerland, Tolbos Tannat 2016

19 in stock

Notes

Winemaker:
Lukas van Loggerenberg, Van Loggerenberg Wines

Viticulture:
The grapes are transported overnight from Prieska to Stellenbosch. After the 12 hour trip, the organically grown grapes are wholebunch fermented. Grapes are stomped twice a day by the winemaker. After fermentation, the grapes are lightly pressed and then aged for 14 months in older French oak barrels. No finings are used on the wine. Certified organic by Ecocert.

Tasting notes:
'Jancis Robinson terms Tannat a “tannic monster” while winemaker Lukas van Loggerenberg says it’s got “ballas”. The Lowerland Tolbos 2016 as crafted by Van Loggerenberg from grapes grown by friend Bertie Coetzee on his farm in Prieska, Norther Cape is, however, not nearly as intimidating as the above descriptions might lead you to think.

Aromatically, it shows red and black fruit plus quite heady notes of purple flowers and fresh herbs. The palate shows good fruit concentration, moderate acidity and surprisingly soft tannins given that it was 100% whole bunch fermented. A conversation starter rather than a show-stopper.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag, 89/100

'Tantalising dark red fruit flavours followed by soft spiciness on the nose and concentrated full flavoured palate. The fine balance between tannins and fresh acidity creates a beautiful lengthy finish.' – Lukas Van Loggerenberg, Winemaker
