Notes

Since the 2012 maiden release, Roland’s top wine of 2014, we have been impressed with this remarkable single-vineyard Syrah. The 2013 followed with a Platter’s 5-star rating. The 2014 scored 95 points from both Tim Atkin and Christian Eedes and, in recent blind tastings, held its own among some of the finest Northern Rhône Syrahs. Remarkably, the Leeuwenkuil Heritage Syrah’s price has hardly changed since release and could easily fetch twice the price.

Why is it so special? It is produced from a single vineyard on the western slope of the Riebeeksrivier ‘côte’. This region is known for its exceptional vineyards that form part of some of SA’s most prestigious Syrah-based wines, including Mullineux, Boekenhoutskloof, Anthonij Rupert Wines and the Sadie Family Columella. This specific vineyard produces extraordinarily concentrated, small berries which translates into a wine of both power and finesse; much like the famous wines of the Northern Rhône.

The Leeuwenkuil Heritage Syrah 2015 is brimming with the concentration of a great vintage. While emphatically world-class, this complex and layered wine is quintessentially Swartland. Shy to start, the nose continues to evolve and invite with florals and white pepper. It oscillates between red and black fruit with a lifted fynbos freshness. The palate shows the same complexity. The ripe fruit is laced with meaty flavours and wonderfully coated tannins. A clear line of acidity keeps the wine focused and fresh and contributes to its long, lingering finish. It is a wine of startling power and elegance and will mature over the next 10 – 15 years.

Tasting notes:
'This complex wine is a true reflection of the Swartland area’s distinctive combination of schist soils and indigenous Cape fynbos. The palate is laden with fynbos herbs, thyme, buchu and white pepper. Violets, black olives and blueberry flavours lend complexity and lead to a long, satisfying finish. Ready to be enjoyed right now, but will age well for another 10 years.' – Leeuwenkuil Family Vineyards
