Notes

'They are priced at the same level, but I prefer this Chardonnay of the two new Leeu Passant releases. Sourced from a vineyard on the False Bay side of the Helderberg, it’s a saline, ocean-influenced style with lovely elegance, lift and focus, subtle oak and a refreshing, palate-cleansing finish. 2018-25.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 96/100

'Andrea and Chris Mullineux who have established an exceptional reputation working with Swartland vineyards have been working on a new project with Indian businessman Analjit Singh for the past few years, grapes sourced from across the Cape. The first of these wines from the 2015 vintage and carrying the Leeu Passant label have now been released. Matured for 12 months in 228-litre barrels, 30% new. A dramatic yet beautifully poised wine. Citrus blossom, lemon and orange plus spice on the nose. Huge fruit concentration and driving acidity (total acidity is an astounding 8.1 g/l). Layers and layers of flavour.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za 95/100

An adventure into Cape wine heritage by Chris & Andrea Mullineux and Analjit Singh.

Sourced from a parcel of Chardonnay planted in deep loam rich soils of Helderberg Mountain.

Tasting notes:
This classy wine has citrus blossom, flint and salinity on the nose. The palate is packed with citrus zest and crushed shells and has a textured, vibrant and long finish. Best served at 10-12 °C, this wine will show optimally when decanted within the first 3 years after bottling.

Production:
The grapes are chilled in our cold room, where after they are pressed whole bunch and allowed to settle overnight. 25ppm SO2 is added, and no further additions are made. The must is then racked to barrel for fermentation and temperatures are not allowed to exceed 24°C. Fermentation lasted 42 days after which the wine was left to complete malolactic fermentation and left unsulphured until bottling. 12 months in 225L French oak barrels; 30% new.

About Leeu Pessant:
Since 2013, Chris and Andrea have been working on a new wine project with their partner Analjit Sing. They are excited to announce the release of a new flagship portfolio of wines called Leeu Passant - a name derived from heraldry, where a 'Lion Passant' is a walking lion. For many years, their viticulturist, Rosa Kruger, has been enthusing about special parcels of vines outside the Swartland; however, they couldn’t use these as their Mullineux and Kloof Street wines are exclusively from Swartland vineyards. Leeu Passant is the culmination of a vision shared by Chris, Andrea and Analjit, to harness these exciting vineyards to create wines under a new label in a different wine region, in their Franschhoek winery, with the same attention to detail, passion, and uncompromisingly high standards that their Swartland wines are made with.

Analysis:
Alc: 14.0% RS: 2.3 g/l TA: 7.1 g/l pH: 3.22
