Notes

'Julien Schaal makes his wines at Gabriëlskloof in Bot River and also buys most of his Syrah grapes from there too. This is a fresh, taut, cracked pepper-scented red with savoury, umami notes, refreshing acidity and red berry fruit. 2018-21'. – Tim Atkin, Special South Africa Report 2017, 91/100

The vineyard is a mixture of Bokkeveld shale, giving weight and structure; and sandstone, giving floral, spice and fruit. All fruit is destemmed, but not crushed, and fermented whole berry then aged in 300L Burgundy barrels for 12 months (15% new).

Tasting notes:
Pretty florals and fresh, red and black fruits interplay with cool climate spice giving this wine depth and complexity. Tannins are well managed and the acidity is cleansing with a satisfyingly dry finish. In short: delicious.
