Notes

Coaxing the best from Swartland Syrah is a challenge and, while not many manage to offer freshness whilst retaining complexity, the 2016 Kolbroek may have achieved just that. It offers great varietal typicity, true expression of terroir and exceptional value. Jurgen Gouws, from our first group of Young Gunners, produces his own wines under the Intellego label. Influenced by the natural wine movement, he has always produced wines that test the boundaries but his irreverent style has evolved and his exciting 2016s are more precise and much more serious than his labels suggest.

Tasting notes:
'This vintage involved semi-carbonic fermentation on at least half the wine. A rather beautiful and irresistible nose of lavender, rose petal, red and black fruit plus pepper. The palate shows good fruit density given an alcohol of just 12%. Lean and racy with a bone-dry finish. Pure, poised and sure to bring joy to fans of the variety.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100

Winemaker's comments:
'During this vintage we started playing around with semi carbonic fermentation on this wine on at least 50% of the final blend. The wine shows more fruit and also a very subtle but present tannin while one have the feeling of a fresher wine. Fermented for 10 days on the skins and aged in old 500L French oak barrels for 10 months.' – Jurgen Gouws, Winemaker
