'Greatest value red wine in Piedmont' – Produttori del Barbaresco

It’s hard to overstate how thrilling a tasting this was,’ wrote Jamie Goode earlier this year about an evening spent tasting Piedmont wines from the 1960s. The tasting included a number of Produttori del Barbarescos from 1967, which was the first year this 120-year-old co-operative produced their single-vineyard Riserva wines.

Remarkably fresh, elegant and composed at 51 years old, it’s hard to believe how inexpensive these surreal, long-ageing, old-school beauties are. Often quoted as being the greatest red wine co-operative in the world, Produttori's 56 farmers still deliver their fruit to the old winery on the Barbaresco hill and the winemaking has hardly changed over the decades. Today, it produces one 6th of the appellation’s wines.

Produttori del Barbaresco

The Produttori del Barbaresco wines are some of Wine Cellar’s favourites and they produce ridiculously good wines at every level. The Langhe Nebbiolo 2016 is ‘possibly the greatest value red wine in Piedmont,’ writes Greg Sherwood MW and it will drink well for a decade or more.

The 2014 vintage has been maligned throughout much of Italy, but Barbaresco may very well turn out to be a bright spot,’ writes Italian wine aficionado Antonio Galloni of Vinous, and the ‘2014 is one of the finest editions of the straight Barbaresco.’ The Produttori Barbaresco 2014 is made in a wonderfully classic, terroir-driven and long-ageing style.

Sadly, we can only offer one Riserva from 2013, which was a cracking vintage for Produttori. The Barbaresco Pora Riserva 2013 is ‘an especially powerful, brooding edition of the Pora’ according to Antonio and there is a good chance it will offer a thrilling experience in 2064…

Later in the year, we will be receiving a small allocation of all the 2014 Riservas. Please email me at Roland@winecellar.co.za to register your interest.
