Notes

Gabriëlskloof is a family-owned-and-run wine estate just outside Botrivier. The farm and vineyards were established in 2000, with their first vintage made in the cellar in 2009. Some years on, they are confident that as their roots dig ever deeper into Botrivier, their understanding of the terroir will grow, along with wines that elegantly, understatedly, simply speak for themselves.

Cellar Master at Gabriëlskloof since 2014, Peter-Allan Finlayson has quietly been reshaping the Gabriëlskloof aesthetic. Possibly surpassing the great 2015 vintage, 2017 sees the release of a trio of Gabriëlskloof wines set to redefine the benchmarks in Botriver, including one of the finest Cabernet Francs in SA and a pair of highly-rated, terroir-specific Syrahs.

The Gabrielskloof Lansdscape Series was created from a desire to incorporate the best of Gabrielskloof vineyards with some of South Africa’s old vine treasures. It celebrates provenance, together with an appreciation for the arresting hills and dales of the majestic Overberg.

The 2 terroir-specific Syrahs have shot right to the very top echelon of SA Syrah; competing head-to-head with the very best from Stellenbosch and Swartland. The 2017 Gabriëlskloof Landscape Series Syrah on Sandstone is a dead ringer for Northern Rhône Syrah – elegant and refined with a savoury thread. These are impressive releases that add serious impetus to Botriver’s Syrah pedigree.

Tasting notes:
'Own fruit. 40% whole-bunch fermentation, maturation lasting 14 months in 500-litre barrels, 30% new. An enticing nose of red fruit, fynbos and pepper while the palate is marked by purity and lightness – clean fruit, good freshness and very fine tannins make for a very pretty wine. Alcohol: 14%.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100
