Notes

'We seek to produce classic wines in a new world context that reflect a traditional, age-old way of working coupled with the new world vineyards which we source our fruit from. The only varieties that we work with are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with multi-vineyard blends and single vineyard wines making up the collection.' Andrew and Peter-Allan, the team behind Crystallum.

Peter and Max are the first names of the growers who supplied the fruit for the first vintage of this wine. The fruit sources have subsequently changed over the years but the name is now entrenched for this multi-vineyard pinot noir blend. It is sourced from two vineyards in the Hemel en Aarde area of Walker Bay.

Crystallum wines are more serious and sure-footed with each release and the 2018 Peter Max is a pitch-perfect Pinot – especially at this price. It seduces with sumptuous fruit weight, balanced by savoury intrigue. There is more texture, body and power than the precise 2017, yet it's delicious already.

With more than a decade of Pinot Noir-focused experience, Crystallum is producing some of SA’s finest Pinots and, as the first taste of their 2018s, the Peter Max does not disappoint.

Tasting notes:
'Just released but already delicious. This wine belies its youth with good structure and power, yet it is ready now. This is a good expression of the 2018 vintage with greater concentration on the palate. A complex nose offers layered red and darker fruit and a savoury undertow etched with tea leaf notes that follow on to a textured and fuller palate than previous vintages. This is a smart wine – confident and complex with a touch of earthy sexiness adding to the pleasure.' – James Pietersen (Dec 2018)

Viticulture:
The 2018 Peter Max Pinot Noir is crafted from fruit sourced from five vineyards, four in the Hemel en Aarde area of Walker Bay and one on a high altitude site in Elandskloof. These vineyards form the perfect building blocks to reflect this dry, but excellent vintage.

Vinification:
The 2018 Peter Max is naturally fermented with 50% of the fruit de-stemmed and the remainder left as whole clusters. Extraction is kept to a minimum during active fermentation with a total time of four to five weeks on the skins.
