Notes

The Mababel Pinot Noir is a single vineyard wine from Overberg. It is produced by Crystallum wines - a small, family run and privately owned winery based in the Walker Bay region of South Africa.

Vineyard block:
The Mabalel Pinot Noir is produced from a 700 metre high vineyard that rests in what resembles a volcanic crater surrounded by some of the Cape’s highest mountain peaks that are regularly covered by snow during winter. This is the third vintage of this wine and Mabalel was the first Pinot Noir produced from this valley.

Vinification:
Mabalel 2017 was fermented using only native yeasts and sees a much lower portion of the fruit kept as whole clusters (10%) than the other Crystallum Cuvees. The total time in tank was 29 days with a 14 day post fermentation maceration. The wine was then transferred to barrel (20% new) where it remained for 11 months before bottling.

Tasting notes:
'Grapes from Elandskloof. 10% whole bunch fermentation. A properly complex nose showing red and black fruit, some musk, earth, spice as well as just a hint of reduction. The palate, meanwhile, is tightly wound with pure fruit and fine tannins, the finish long and savoury – intricate and refined.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100

Analysis:
Alc: 14.0% RS: 1.7 g/L TA: 5.4 g/L pH: 3.57
