Notes

For those with more classically inclined palates, the 2014 Rhônes juxtapose the flashy 2015s with their fine elegance and rigid structure. Much like Burgundy, the cooler weather and more difficult conditions in 2014 produced lighter wines with less fruit and more bones. The 2014 vintage will take time to unfold but traditionalists believe it will trump 2015 down the line as the true terroir shines through. The tiny Hermitage appellation, just 140ha, is the home of Syrah and the Chapoutier La Sizeranne 2014 is benchmark Hermitage for the long haul.

Tasting notes:
'The entry level Hermitage is the 2014 la Sizeranne, which comes from a multitude of different terroirs in Hermitage. I also continue to think the quality of this cuvee has soared in recent vintages. Powdered rock, cassis, chocolate and smoked earth all give way to a medium to full-bodied, beautifully textured Hermitage that has sweet tannin and a great finish. It should benefit from short term cellaring and have 15-20 years of overall longevity'. – Wine Advocate, 90-92/100
