Notes

85% Sangioveto and 15% Malvasia Nera

Castellare di Castellina was born of the union of four estates (Castellare, Caselle, San Niccolò and Le Case) on the initiative of Paolo Panerai, with the aim of producing wine of the best possible quality.

Castellare’s top wine, I Soda di San Niccolo, ranked in the Wine Spectator Top 100 on multiple occasions and recognised with the prestigious Gambero Rosso’s Tre Bicchieri and Bidenda’s Cinque Grappoli ratings. The company takes great pride in demonstrating the greatness of the Sangioveto variety, paired with Malvasia Nera, achieving a worldwide position of fifth place.

Tasting notes:
'Dark, brooding, thick and profound, the 2014 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is one of those wines that pushes the quality limits of Sangiovese. The blend here is 85% Sangioveto (an antique name for Sangiovese) with 15% Malvasia Nera. The wine is aged in barrique for 30 months. The bouquet shows black fruit aromas with elaborate spice, toasted nut, cured leather, licorice and crushed stone or granite. The purity of those aromas is profound and impressive. What I appreciate most about this wine is that it delivers this rare level of quality in what was not an easy vintage. ' – Wine Advocate, 94+/100

'On the lean side, yet ripe and complex, with tart cherry, plum, leather, tobacco, mineral and underbrush flavors. The innate power sneaks up on you, and this finishes with crisp acidity and firm tannins. Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera. Best from 2020 through 2035.' – Wine Spectator, 93/100

'Intense red with hints of garnet. Deeply sophisticated and showcasing its full pedigree in terms of both the bouquet and palate of the wine. The fruit quality is exceptional and each individual aroma can be distinguished with total clarity, from the cherry to the spices, whose focus and integration are exceptional.' – Wine maker
