Silverthorn – Bubbly magic!

The Silverthorn Jewel Box 2013 must be one of the finest sparkling wines on the market right now. Previous accolades include Tim Atkin’s 2016 ‘Sparkling Wine of the Year’ for the 2010 vintage, while the The Green Man 2011 won the trophy for the ‘Best Sparkling Wine’ at the 2014 Six Nations Wine Challenge.

Previously Cellar Master at Steenberg, John Loubser is now focusing solely on Silverthorn. With more than 220 sparkling wine producers in SA, Silverthorn’s latest limited releases confirm their prowess, craftsmanship and the fact that their Cap Classiques have fast become some of our very best.


The Jewel Box 2013, 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir, is the star. It’s a complex sparkling wine that spends almost 5 years on the lees and offers hints of dried strawberry, classic brioche notes and a lovely, fine mousse. It’s rich and broadly textured with a bone-dry and saline finish; a great food wine that will reward cellaring. It is a steal at this price.

The Green Man, a fine Blanc de Blancs, is the wine that Silverthorn is best known for. The latest The Green Man 2015 spent 24 months on the lees and 3 months in the bottle before being released. This is a crisp, focused wine with a wonderful mousse that coats a detailed and linear acidity.

The last in the trilogy is the unique The Genie Rosé NV which is, unusually, made from 100% Shiraz. This sparkler is fresh, vibrant and great for everyday drinking. The palate is laced with strawberry, seashell and a flavourful flavourful finish.
