Wine that grows on trees – Bouchon País Salvaje 2017

Bouchon Pais Salvaje 2017

 

The País variety has one of the longest vinicultural histories in Chile and, until recently, was the country’s most-planted variety. País Salvaje, which translates to ‘wild País’, is made from red grapes from vines that grow freely up and amongst the natural vegetation of the Bouchon estate in the coastal dryland of Maule, Chile. These wild vines are natural climbers and, having never had man's intervention, they need to be picked from the foliage using ladders. Quite the sight during harvest, they represent the purest expression of organic and sustainable viticulture.

Wines are often said to be unique but, harvested from treetops in the wild, this is the real deal! The 2017 Bouchon País Salvaje is a textured red with a medium to full-bodied palate. Smoky notes over darker fruit lead to an attractive, characterful and salty palate. It’s delicious and different and well-worth geeking out on.

David Nieuwoudt is no stranger to new frontiers and his Longavi collaboration with Bouchon’s winemaker, Julio Bouchon, has produced a fine Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. His new 2017 Longavi Glup Cinsault, from 98-year-old vines, and 2018 Longavi Glup Chenin Blanc, the first Chilean Chenin Blanc to be bottled, are really exciting. The 2018 Glup Chenin is a fantastic wine but, like the Cinsault, it’s sadly in very short supply. Get some while you can.
