How good is Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot Noir?

The recent Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot Noir Celebration highlighted the greatness of the 2017 Pinot Noir vintage. The fickle variety, planted in a more marginal climate, achieved a thrilling level of bright fruit and depth in 2017. Combined with maturing vineyards and collaboration between new and older producers, the quality in the valley has reached an all-time high.

Discussed at the event was Hemel-en-Aarde’s stature compared to other international benchmarks. After gathering the metrics from 6 key wine regions, see the full write-up on Daily Maverick, the picture becomes clear. Hemel-en-Aarde produces world-class Pinot, at low prices and in very small volumes. The average Pinot Noir price is a fraction of Vosne-Romanée’s average and half that of Oregon in the USA.

The best value to be found in the valley is Corlea Fourie’s Bosman Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot Noir 2017 which punches well above its weight. The granite-strewn ‘Upper’ ward produces more aromatics and finer acidity compared to the ‘Valley’ and ‘Ridge’ wards. The 2017 Bosman shows typical Hemel-en-Aarde purity, combined with classy tannins and fine elegance. It's simply cracking for the price.
