After an extensive review of the Bordeaux 2000 vintage in
February, we can proudly punt this as one of the greatest
Bordeaux vintages of the modern era. Comments such as 'the
greatest wines I have ever tasted', and 'I
only gave 17s and 18s plus' flew across the room
and confirmed everyone's delight. Across the appellations the
wines are rich, but not over-done, showing amazing freshness
and fine but juicy tannins.
Of all the wines tasted (and with a full days decanting), it
was only the Montrose that hasn't quite reached its drinking
window and its enormous tannins are yet to integrate. This
along with the top-tier wines will age well for another 2 or
3 decades or more.
No rain over
Bordeaux during the vital August & September months caused
thick skins and massive concentration. This resulted in
powerful, muscular red wines across all appellations that
are slow to evolve. A huge 5-star vintage for red wines in
all major appellation.
In general the 2000s are weightier and richer than the 1996 Medocian or 1998 Right Bank wines with
their profound tannic backbones and lower acidities.
We also offer another stellar
vintage, 2005, with excellent quality from the petit
chateaux through to Grand Cru Classe. The 'lesser-wines' are
entering their drinking-window and offer sublime freshness
and concentration.
