Bordeaux en-primeur 2016

Wine Cellar has been offering Bordeaux en primeur since the 2002 vintage. The en-primeur system affords wine collectors and enthusiasts the opportunity to buy the latest vintage before release. The 2015 vintage is available for purchase while still in barrel, for bottling and import mid-2018.

The vintage

An El Niño-influenced hot and dry summer produced conditions to support a very high quality 2015 vintage. It is one of the finest modern-day vintages, in line with 2005, 2009 and 2010. Quality doesn’t appear to be completely homogeneous across the appellation, but the top châteaux have produced prodigious wines.

‘In general, all growers are extremely pleased with their wines, some exceptionally so. Quite clearly 2015 is by far the most concentrated of the last five vintages and, in line with the times, and contrary to the year's weather, the wines are beautiful rather than excessive. The vintage seems to have a hallmark very harmonious and succulent style.’ – Bill Blatch

‘I can already say that 2015 is indeed a fantastic year, producing rich and opulent reds with ripe and velvety tannins. The wines have a lot of ‘wow’ factor when you taste them… They are fun to taste and give energy and intrigue.’ – James Suckling

Should I buy 2015 Bordeaux en primeur?

Five of the last 8 vintages of Bordeaux en-primeur campaigns have not been hugely successful, with prices dropping from en primeur through to physical release. The depreciation of the Rand over the last decade has, however, made almost all en-primeur releases worthwhile in Rand terms. The great vintages of 2005, 2009 and 2010 were released at ambitious prices and haven’t appreciated dramatically in Euro terms

The 2015 vintage has been priced in line with the great 2009 and 2010 vintages, so prices are unlikely to change before the wines' release in 2018. Your decision to buy Bordeaux 2015 may, therefore, come down to your medium-term view on the Rand. The wines

The top châteaux produced great wines in 2015. There is some variation in the vintage as well as variation in the style of wine produced by each château – broadly speaking, modern versus traditional. Read the critics' notes or enquire with us about which châteaux would suit your palate.
