Is this the best value Syrah in South Africa?

'Keermont Vineyard is one of the leading lights of Stellenbosch,’ remarked Neal Martin in his last SA report and promised ‘exciting times...ahead’. We could not agree more. Every time we taste Alex Starey’s wines we are not only struck by their quality and refinement but by the incredible value they offer. The 2 wines that best capture this are his Keermont Syrah and Keermont Terrasse.

The Keermont Terrasse 2015 epitomises the Chenin-driven white blends that have re-energised the South African landscape. The 2015 is particularly fine with floral and stone fruit aromas leading on to a complex, textured palate with a dry and chalky finish. It offers a complexity often only seen at twice this price and demands time in the glass.

Alex is partial to whole-bunch fermentation and his non-interventionist approach with Syrah brings Rhône-like finesse and savoury tones to balance the trademark fruit purity of Stellenbosch. The knock-out Keermont Syrah 2014 is produced from 3 different Helderberg vineyards. Each brings a different aspect to the blend making this a multi-layered Syrah; a rare find at this price point.
