Pinotage Cinsaut

Ashbourne, Pinotage Cinsaut 2017

Notes

The extreme shortage of Pinotage grapes in the face of dramatically increased local and international demand forced Ashbourne to consider sourcing grapes from outside their appellation. They have always been intrigued by the idea of creating a Pinotage with a youthful, fresh, fruit purity un-tarnished by any wood influence. Their cooler climate clay-grown grapes are simply too restrained, tightly wound and bright in acidity to do without time and air-exchange before release.

By sourcing grapes from the warmer Swartland, they have guaranteed a lower acidity and higher pH to afford an attractive early mouthfeel - even at their lower target alcohol levels. By blending in 20% Cinsaut, they were able to ameliorate the dense richness of the Pinotage and add a lovely, tight, bright freshness to the wine.

This lower alcohol unwooded blend of 80% Pinotage and 20% Cinsaut is made from grapes sourced from old vineyards in the Swartland appellation, for open generosity of palate in the year of production. The richness and depth of the Pinotage is freshened by the lightness and brightness of the Cinsaut.

Analysis:
Alc: 12.99% RS: 1.7g/l TA: 6.4g/l pH: 3.26
