Andre Perret, Saint-Joseph 2016

Notes

100% Syrah

André Perret is ‘one of the stars of Condrieu’ says RobertParker.com and is another perennial Wine Cellar favourite. His limited, 96-point Coteau du Chéry 2016 is ‘just wow’ and complements a fine portfolio of 2016s.

André’s 2016 Saint-Joseph must not be overlooked however. It offers a similarly classic expression of the appellation and more fine value. The granitic soils on the other side of the Rhône River gives the Perret a finer acidity, darker fruit and silkier tannins.

‘Fans of the traditional style should love the 2016 vintage in the northern Rhône, a far cooler year than 2015.’ – Vinous.com

‘The younger vintage, 2016, has even more buzz. Producers are likening it to the classic 2010, with its powerful fruit but greater emphasis on structure and spine.’ – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator

Tasting notes:
'Brilliant ruby. Smoky, mineral-accented cherry and blackberry aromas are complicated by hints of candied violet, olive and licorice. Supple and broad in the mouth, offering concentrated black and blue fruit flavors that become sweeter and spicier with air. A suave floral pastille note builds on the clinging finish, which shows very good clarity and sneaky tannins.' – Josh Raynolds, Vinous.com, 91/100

'Off a granite site in Chavanay, Perret's 2016 Saint Joseph is a tarry, black olive-scented wine that comes across as full-bodied and sturdy but also ripe and juicy. Black cherries linger on the mouthwatering, silky finish.' – The Wine Advocate, 90/100

Viticulture:
Traditional and entirely manual methods are used to cultivate the vines. No systematic treatment, pesticides are used with moderation and only as and when required.

Vinifcation:
Fermentation in stainless steel vats between 15 days and 3 weeks with temperature control. Maturing 12 months in barrels in an air-conditioned wine storehouse. Temperature and hygrometry control..
