Alheit Vineyards, Hemelrand Vine Garden 2017

Notes

26% Chenin Blanc, 26% Chardonnay, 23% Roussanne, 21% Verdelho and 4% Muscat

Hemelrand is planted to Roussanne, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Verdelho, Viognier and Muscat. They bottle this wine just as the vineyard produces it, essentially creating a field blend. Proportions will vary every vintage because of climatic conditions. The primary concept is 'one place, one wine'.

Tasting notes:
'From vines planted in 2010, the 2017 Hemelrand Vine Garden was matured in old neutral barrels and cement egg. It has a clean, pure bouquet of lemon curd, albumen and light yellow flowers. The palate is well balanced, with a taut line of acidity, and quite saline in the mouth. The sharp, slightly flinty finish oddly reminds me of a mature Chablis. Very fine.' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 90/100

'An enticing nose – floral perfume and dried herbs before citrus, stone fruit and quince. Impressive concentration , punchy acidity and just a touch of yeasty complexity before a pithy finish. Textured without being weighty – big fruit, big acidity. From young Hemel en Aarde Ridge vineyards, this is the most compelling and convincing bottling to date. Alcohol: 13.66%' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100
