Flotsam & Jetsam Cinsaut

Alheit Vineyards, Flotsam & Jetsam Cinsaut 2016

Notes

Made in a light style and ultimately just to be smashed back. The wine straddles the line between seriousness and fun and is best enjoyed as the mood takes you. It is essential to serve this wine chilled though.

Flotsam & Jetsam is Chris and Suzaan Alheit’s take on Cinsault. The grapes are from the same Darling block that supplies Francois Haasbroek, Ian Naudé, Donovan Rall and Duncan Savage.

This wine is made from dry farmed bushvine parcels with an average age of around 240 years divided by 6. We tend to pick Cinsault relatively early. Up until now we’ve always used 100% whole cluster fermentation, with very gentle extraction work, if any. This philosophy accounts for the wines being quite “light and bright”. Over-ripe and over-extracted Cinsault can be lead-footed and syrupy. Maturation in neutral oak and in tank. Future vintages will be matured in cement tanks. – Wine Maker

Tasting notes:
'Strawberry, pomegranate, flowers and spice on the nose. Light yet flavourful with zesty acidity and prickly tannins. Seems slighter, even more underdone than charming 2015.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za 89/100
