Alheit Vineyards, Cartology 2016

R305

49 in stock

Notes

89% Chenin Blanc and 11% Semillon.

In its first release, the 2011 Cartology from Alheit Vineyards took the world by storm. The 2016 Cartology, their best yet, continues on its upward curve in quality.

This is a wine crafted to express terroir by focussing on heritage grape varieties from the across the Cape wine map. The Cartology 2016 celebrates the Cape’s winemaking history and heritage by focusing on Chenin Blanc, vinified from different vineyards including Skurfberg, Paardeberg, Bot River and Stellenbosch, as well as old vine Semillon from Franschhoek. The vineyards are key to this finely honed blend and in 2015 it is a confident and masterly example of the quintessential Cape white blend.

Tasting notes:
'On account of the heat wave, 2016 produced the smallest amount of Cartology (69 barrels) since 2013. Early picked for freshness, it’s a spicy, complex, naturally fermented blend of Chenin with 11% Semillon, showing stony minerality and notes of aniseed, beeswax and citrus peel. 2018-24'. – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 95/100

'89% Chenin Blanc sourced variously from Perdeberg, Skurfberg and Stellenbosch and 11% Franschhoek Semillon. Some reduction before subtle notes of lime, naartjie and white peach, talcum powder and dried herbs. Lovely fruit definition – fantastic shape in the mouth with great side and back palate. The acidity, meanwhile, is suitably fresh and the finish long and pithy.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za 94/100.
