Cape Town Tastings

wine tasting cape town

Wine Cellar offers three types of tastings:

  • Wine Cellar Tastings: Taste wines from the world's top producers. This year's line-up includes dinner with Véronique Drouhin, a Thelema Cabernet Sauvignon vertical and a Burgundy 2011 tasting.
  •
  • Introductory Tastings: After a packed series of Introductory Tastings last year, our new series will once again guide you through famous regions and wines from around the world. Unlike our other tastings, these are not 'blind' and cater to both the novice and seasoned taster. Our informal yet informative tastings will kick-start your wine love affair. The benchmark international wines will be compared to top SA wines that are pushing the boundaries.
  •
  • Custom Tastings: Wine Cellar offers custom tastings to suit your palate and pocket at the office or in your home. Contact Lisa@winecellar.co.za for further information.

Tastings start at 18:30 and end at 20:00; dinners finish at around 22:00. We generally taste between 12 and 16 wines.

Wine Cellar Tastings

Châteauneuf du Pape 2010 with Vieille Julienne – R450
26 February, Wine Cellar
Another spotlight on the great 2010 Rhône vintage with one of Châteauneuf's finest properties, Domaine Vieille Julienne. Now producing three cuvées in this top vintage, we will compare these old vine Grenaches to other big names including Janasse, Beaucastel, Clos des Papes and Font de Michelle. The highlight of the tasting will undoubtedly be the Vieille Julienne Réserve, of which only 500 cases are made, and which was rated 99/100 by Parker!

Burgundy 2011s – R450
12 March, Wine Cellar
The last affordable vintage? 2011 is described by Allen Meadows of Burghound.com as 'A Very Good if not Genuinely Great Vintage for Whites and Reds'. We tasted Drouhin and Lambrays' 2011s last year; we now introduce Hudelot Noëllat (Vougeot), Henri Boillot (Meursault), Louis Boillot (Chambolle) and Marc Morey (Chassagne). A dazzling tasting that covers most of the Côte d'Or and will leave you in a Burgundian trance. Highlights will include a Bâtard Montrachet, Puligny Clos de la Mouchère, Nuits St Georges Les Pruliers and Petit Vougeot.

Raats and New MR de Compostella Release – R200
26 March, Wine Cellar
Bruwer Raats' MR de Compostella is perhaps SA's most sought-after red. It has achieved SA's highest ever score in the US press and each vintage sells out immediately on release. We also look forward to the first serious release of the brilliant 2012 Stellenbosch vintage. Bruwer will guide you through a mini-vertical, including the maiden 2004 vintage to show just how well this Bordeaux-style blend ages. We will also taste through multiple vintages of the Red Jasper and Raats Cabernet Franc.

From Australia, we taste Alain Graillot's Heathcote project, Redbank’s fine cold-climate offerings and Jamsheed, one of Victoria's rising stars. SA’s Ultra-Premium Wines: Luxurious or Expensive? – R700

Here is an opportunity to sample most of the SA reds that sell for over R500 in a blind taste-off. Who is the king of the luxury wine game and which style is most successful at this level? Wines will include De Toren’s Book XVII and Black Lion, Rust en Vrede 1694, Kanonkop Black Label, Dalla Cia Teano, Mullineux Schist, Sadie Columella and more…

Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage 12-Year Vertical – R400
4 June, Wine Cellar
One of the world’s most loved wines, Graillot, is the soul of Rhône Syrah and the king of Crozes-Hermitage. Few wines reflect the vintage so closely and have maintained their classical styling over three decades. We taste wines spanning 12 vintages back to 2000 along with the super cuvée La Guiraude.
