KALLESKE, BAROSSA
The Kalleske family have been
growing grapes in South Australia’s Barossa Valley for nearly 150 years.
With 200 acres of land planted to ancient Shiraz, Grenache and Semillon
vines in the esteemed Greenock sub region, Kalleske have an abundance of
raw materials to craft exquisitely flavoured, uniquely Australian wines.
As long time suppliers of grapes for Penfolds Grange, this organic and
biodynamic producer is one of the rising stars of the Australian wine
scene. "magnificently concentrated, full throttle reds that are
indigenous to the top echelon of Southern Australian producers. In fact
there is nothing like these wines anywhere else in the world."
Robert Parker

YALUMBA, BAROSSA
The oldest family owned
winery in Australia produces elegant, great value for money wines. The Y
series is fruit driven, but with an elegant context and freshness. The
Tempranillo bridges the old and new world with delicious sweet/sour
notes, savouriness and oodles of sappy fruit. Finally the Signature
(Cabernet Shiraz) which was first made in 1962 is a legend of the
Barossa valley. Full-bodied and age-worthy.
Pewsey vale is situated in
the Eden Valley at 500m above sea-level and is also owned by Yalumba. It
is 'Germanic' in style with lime flavours in a delicate and refined
style with great aging potential.

HODDLES CREEK, YARRA
VALLEY
Giving a pale to medium ruby
color, the 2008 Pinot Noir is a little shy at the moment emitting
delicate yet fragrant aromas of violets, warm strawberries and red
cherry plus touches of espresso, forest floor and cinnamon. It has a
high level of acid, medium body and a medium level of very fine tannins
with a long finish. Enjoyable now, it should continue to drink through
2016. About 6,000 cases of this Pinot Noir were made.
Hoddle’s Creek is a small,
family owned estate in the Yarra Valley producing today around 15,000
cases per annum. The D’Anna family emigrated from Italy and settled on
the property in 1960. In 1997, 25 hectares of their land were committed
to vine. Today the son Franco is the young viticulturalist and winemaker
for the family estate. His wines demonstrate not only his burgeoning
talent but that the family happened upon a special plot of turf when
they moved to the Yarra all those years ago. But Pinot Blanc in the
Yarra? Though an unconventional choice, not least because it can be
difficult to prise anything interesting from this grape, it seems to
work here.

SPINIFEX, BAROSSA
Spinifex is crafting some of
the most progressive, artisanal wine seen in Australia for many years.
New Zealander Pete Schell cut his teeth in the Barossa Valley at the
time honoured Turkey Flat, and then set out with partner Magali Gely to
start up Spinifex in 2001. Family links to France's Languedoc region are
immediately apparent when tasting their outstanding Rhone inspired
wines. With fruit sourced exclusively from old vine vineyards (up to 140
years old) on the upper slopes of the Barossa and Eden Valley's, their's
is a restrained, new age Barossa style, with structure as the central
theme. The Papillon is a blend of Grenache (66%), Cinsault (18%) and
Mataro (16%) and others. The Esprit is 36% Grenache, 34% Shiraz, 20%
Mourvedre, and 10% Cinsault

FELTON ROAD, CENTRAL OTAGO
When the pecking order of New
Zealand wine is debated, Felton Road is always one of the first names
mentioned. The Central Otago producer has been crafting exceptional
wines since their inception in 1997, and has continued to raise the bar
higher with each passing year. In late 2008, Robert Parker’s Wine
Advocate again placed Felton Road in the New Zealand elite, rating it in
the top five producers in the country. "...whenever there is a
tasting designed to challenge the supremacy of Burgundy, it is usually a
Felton Road that is ushered into the ring, floats like butterfly and
out-classes its bloated Old World champions." Robert Parker. The
Riesling is a low-alcohol off-dry Mosel-style.

LAWSONS DRY HILLS,
MARLBOROUGH
Ross and Barbara Lawson
founded Lawson's Dry Hills in 1992, when they decided to make wine
themselves rather than on-selling the grapes that they had been growing
since 1980. Their first vintage, which included Gewürztraminer off their
own vineyard on Alabama Road, was just 15 tonnes and was managed by Ross
from an old tin shed at the back of the property. Their Gewürztraminer
has gone on to be recognised as one of the country's finest and soon
established Lawson's Dry Hills on the national and international stage.
